Medicare Advantage Healthcare Spending Exceeds Original Medicare

On average, in 2019 Medicare Advantage plans spent $321 more per person than traditional Medicare, largely due to the supplemental benefits that are a trademark of Medicare Advantage.
Booming Medicare Advantage enrollment provides another reason for the increase in enrollee spending overall.
Researchers projected that this trend of Medicare Advantage spending exceeding fee-for-service Medicare spending would increase over time, as will enrollment.
By 2029, enrollment growth will have contributed $104 billion—or half—of Medicare Advantage spending.
Higher payments per enrollees will make up the other half of Medicare Advantage spending through 2029 ($105 billion).
The escalating costs per Medicare Advantage enrollee are partly due to the projected growth in rebate payments (eight percent annually, on average).
As quality bonus payments and benchmarks rise, rebates will increase as well.
Overall, Medicare Advantage outpaces traditional Medicare spending. The Medicare Advantage model has never produced savings when compared to traditional Medicare plans, the researchers stated.
However, future Medicare Advantage spending might not be as high as the projections indicate, based on certain factors.
“MedPAC recently recommended changes to how plan payments are calculated, observing that because most plans currently bid well below the cost of providing Part A and B services in traditional Medicare, there is an opportunity for the Medicare program to share in these efficiencies,” the brief explained.
If these changes went into effect, total Medicare Advantage spending might be $82 billion less than the projected $664 billion in total Medicare Advantage spending from 2022 through 2029.
Alternatively, if Medicare Advantage spending growth matched traditional Medicare growth from 2021 to 2029, then overall Medicare Advantage spending might be $183 billion lower than the projected total.

Humana Plan Year 2022 MAPD & PDP Initial Certification and Recertification are Now Open Considering selling Humana MAPD and PDP products this year? Great! As of Tuesday, June 29th at 12 PM EST, Humana Certification and Recertification options are open! Login to Humana Vantage to Begin Deadlines: Initial Certification will remain open until next summer. Recertification Deadline: 5:00 PM EST on November 30th, 2021 General Details: Whether you’re Recertifying for the 1st time or for the 10th, you’ll need to complete both Humana-specific training and AHIP or NAHU. You will have 6 attempts to pass either the AHIP or NAHU test, but may only take one of the two options. The AHIP test requires a 90% to pass, and NAHU requires an 85% to pass. Exclusive Partner agents will also have a new way to meet the CMS training requirement via Humana’s own CMS required training. Agents will be provided details about all their new training options when they enroll in their PY22 Certification or Recertification course in Humana MarketPoint University (HMU). Note: Our Spanish version will be delayed until after the June 29th launch. Look for additional communications on the Spanish version. Certification-only: Agents who complete the 2022 Initial Certification are allowed to sell plans with 2021 effective dates through 12/01/2021. Remember, all agents must complete all of Certification prior to selling Humana’s Medicare Advantage or PDP products. AHIP: Choosing either AHIP or NAHU is required for both Certification and Recertification. When you purchase your AHIP test packages (3 test attempts per package) through the Certification/Recertification course on HMU, Humana offers you a discount. Your test packages will cost $125 rather than the $175 AHIP cost. You will have 6 attempts to pass. Should you need to purchase a second set of tests, you will receive the discount by repeating the process through HMU. Important: After completing the AHIP training, click the “send my exam completion to Humana” link at the bottom of your transcripts page. If you completed AHIP prior to beginning the Humana coursework, login to AHIP from the Humana course and transfer your score to Humana. Once your AHIP score has been received by Humana, you will be able to move forward and complete the Humana portion of the Certification or Recertification course. Accessing and Transferring AHIP Scores Job Aid → NAHU: Again, choosing either NAHU or AHIP is required for both Certification and Recertification. When you purchase your NAHU test package (comes with 6 test attempts) through the Certification/Recertification course on HMU, Humana offers you a discount. Your test packages will cost $90 rather than the $100 NAHU cost. You will have 6 attempts to pass. However, please note, NAHU is newer, and not all carriers accept NAHU. Please make sure to check the continually updating ‘NAHU Accepted Carriers List’ to confirm if NAHU is the right option for you. Important: After completing the NAHU training, your score will automatically be transferred to Humana as long as you have selected Humana on the carrier screen. If you completed NAHU prior to beginning the Humana coursework, login to NAHU from the Humana course to make sure Humana is listed on the carrier screen and save. Once your NAHU score has been received by Humana, you will be able to move forward and complete the Humana portion of the Certification or Recertification course. Accessing and Transferring NAHU Scores Job Aid → We value your partnership and will reimburse your registration fee under the following circumstances:
