Independence Day: The Fourth of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from British rule. Fireworks Tradition: The tradition of fireworks on the Fourth of July dates back to the first celebration in 1777. John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers, envisioned fireworks as part of the festivities, stating that the day should be celebrated with "pomp and parade... bonfires and illuminations." Hot Dog Consumption: Americans consume about 150 million hot dogs on the Fourth of July each year, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Official Holiday: Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1870, and it became a paid federal holiday in 1938. Liberty Bell: The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not rung) thirteen times every Fourth of July in honor of the original thirteen colonies.
